How many grams of hair extensions do I need?
Share
It's the question we're asked most. The short answer: most people need between 100 g and 150 g for a full head, but it depends on how thick your own hair is, how long you want to go and whether you want length, volume or both.
This guide gives you a starting point. Your stylist will always have the final say, because they can see and feel your hair.
Quick guide by hair type
| Your own hair | Volume or a few highlights | Full head, 20" | Full head, 22–24" |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine | 25–50 g | 75–100 g | 100–125 g |
| Medium | 50–75 g | 100–125 g | 125–150 g |
| Thick | 75–100 g | 125–150 g | 150–175 g |
Not sure which you are? Take a ponytail at the base. If it's thinner than a 1 cent coin is wide, your hair is fine. Around the width of a 2 cent coin is medium. Wider than a 5 cent coin is thick.
Why longer extensions need more hair
The longer the extension, the more hair you need for it to look full at the ends. A 24" set with too few grams can look thin and see-through at the bottom, even if the top blends well. If you're going for 22" or 24", plan for the higher end of the range.
How much is in each Aura pack
- Keratin bonds: 25 g per pack, 25 strands of 1 g. Most full heads need 4 to 6 packs.
- Nano rings: 25 g per pack, about 31 strands of 0.8 g. Most full heads need 4 to 6 packs.
- Tape-ins: 50 g per pack, 20 tapes (10 sandwiches). Most full heads need 2 to 3 packs.
- Clip-ins: a full-head set of 120 g. That suits most fine to medium hair; thick hair may need a second set for the ends to match.
Because bonds and nano rings come in 25 g packs, you only buy what you need. If you're between two amounts, it's usually better to go one pack over: your stylist can keep a few strands spare for your move-up.
Length, volume or both?
- Volume only (same length as your own hair, just fuller): use the lower end of the range.
- Length (adding 5 cm or more): use the middle to upper end, so the new length doesn't look thin.
- Length and volume: use the upper end.

Email us a photo of your hair in daylight at info@aurahair.ie, tell us the length you'd like, and we'll suggest how many packs to order. If you're booked in with a stylist, ask them too: they'll often want to check your hair before you order.
